In India, especially in urban cities, the population is increasing mostly due to rural-urban migration in accomplishing higher standard of living. The current population of the world is growing at the rate of 1.13% per annum. These increased populations needing basic amenities for provision of which is challenging to the urban managers. To provide better and efficient facilities, the understanding of trend of population distribution and growth is essential. In light of the though, this paper aims to map the population distribution of Gujarat’s second populous city, Surat. Mapping of population distribution for last three decades i.e. from 1991 to 2011 for a study area of current administrative boundary Surat Municipal Corporation is performed using GIS tools. Results are aimed to help identification of the direction of population growth and in specific, geographical location of wards (or councils) that are acting as growth poles. The population density maps show most densely saturated wards. This research shall help urban planners in discovering the areas having a potential for development and abstracting out the loop holes for controlling the population distribution in the particular pockets. Keywords

Urbanization, a precarious scenario is globally spread which is revamping the whole concept of urban planning. To handle the expansion radically increased urban area, the local government faces challenges particularly in planning for future. However, Quality Of Life (QOL) is a tool that expands city into sustainable manner by improving environmental, educational, social, economic, political, health, and infrastructural conditions through objective and subjective appraisal. QOL is the path that builds a measure over happiness and satisfaction for the government in the mind of citizens. Current research paper discusses about an assessment of QOL in city Surat located in Gujarat, India. This descriptive-analytical study carried out through a questionnaires-household field survey of 385 respondents in seven zones of Surat city. Collected data was analyzed using spread sheets. Cronbach’s alpha for survey data was observed a value of 0.873. The analysis shows that environmental, health, social, and education index are highest in the South-West Zone. Economic index seems to be highest in the Central Zone and infrastructure index is the highest in the West Zone. The North Zone gets lowest environmental, health, social, political and educational index. However, the South Zone shows the lowest infrastructure and economic index. Among all zones in Surat, the QOL for the North Zone (2.77) was worst and fo rthe South-West Zone was found to be excellent (3.52). A discussion over recommendations to improve QOL of Surat city concludes the paper. Keywords

There are many areas in many cities of India having a lack of service in infrastructure. The absence of some basic facilities like water supply, sewerage, health, transportation, electricity and solid waste directly affects the life of people. Government always attempts to improve the lives of individuals by enhancing infrastructure service. Economically weaker section citizens (resettled) also use all services. Many people of EWS housing are suffering from health related problems, transportation-related issue, and many other problems. It is important to identify and monitor the level of service of infrastructure provided by the Government in EWS housing. This paper seeks to focus on assessment of infrastructure service in EWS housing. The main objective of this research paper is to study present scenario of infrastructure service and actual requirements of service in EWS housing located in Kosad and Bhestan of Surat city(Gujarat State, India). An indicator development based analysis was performed over a pilot survey that revealed around 68% and 36% indicators have positive results regarding water quality in Kosad and Bhestan Awas respectively. The Analysis of sewerage infrastructure service and solid waste service indicates that around 88% and 96%indicators are positive regarding overall service in Kosad and Bhestan Awas respectively. Around 36% and 12% indicators are positive regarding vehicle parking facility in Kosad and Bhestan Awas respectively. Analysis of health infrastructure service shows that 60% indicator is positive regarding overall health service in Bhestan Awas. Keywords

In India, with an unprecedented population growth and migration, an increased urban population and urbanisation is unplanned. More and more towns and cities are booming with a change in the land use of outer fringe and to the immediate vicinity of the city. This dispersed development is an urban sprawl. It brings opportunities yet it is an undesirable type of city growth. It happens without following any planning in general. Surat city is experiencing tremendous growth since past few decades. Present study if focussed on Surat city sprawl. In 2006 when one of a major city limits expansions granted, area of SMC boundary jumped from 112 Sq.Km. to 326 Sq.Km accommodating a population 44, 62,002. Objectives of study are to identify factors affecting city limit expansion, to study demographic dynamics of Surat city and propose appropriate direction for future extension of Surat city. With the help of the past expansion data of city limit and factors (derived from expert opinion) affecting the expansion are identified. Keywords

The main goal of an urban planner is to plan with citizen’s comfort, health, and utility in context. GIS is a tool for mapping the plans with attribute data and details. As a result, the best suitable location for any of the facility is identified. The educational centers in the study area are identified to have poor accessibility (Waleed Lagrab, 2015). The purpose of the study is to use GIS for exploring ideal locations of educational centers. In the study, an analysis of accessibility of educational centers with road network is carried out. Demographic data were used for the demand analysis. A proximity analysis using the buffer tool was applied. As a result, the study revealed about the effectiveness of analysis by using the GIS technology. Despite the area developed employing an implementation of T. P. Scheme mechanism, it was abstracted that the locations of educational centers seemed not to be planned following any guiding parameter. Also, as per demand, the existing centers are inadequate with dispersed distribution. Keywords

BRT system is flexible, high-performance rapid transit mode that combines a variety of physical, operating and network elements. It is a permanently integrated system with a quality image and unique identity for urban transportation. The objective of this study is to analyse existing performance of Surat BRT system and to recommend measures to improve and making the BRT system sustainable. Surat BRT system is in its initial stage at present, hence improving its performance will encourage people to use BRT system efficiently. The performance of BRT system is analysed by service quality and user satisfaction survey. Keywords
